The Process

Capturing the vineyard’s transformation over the course of a year is as much an art form as the lenticular printing itself. First, we select a single vantage point—often a scenic overlook or a cherished spot that reveals the most dramatic views of the vines. From there, we carefully plan four different photo sessions, one for each season. But the truth is, it’s never just a single day in each season. We wait patiently for the right moment when the light is most enchanting, the vines tell their own quiet story, and the atmosphere reflects the true character of that time of year. Sometimes that means arriving at dawn to catch the first rays of golden light, or waiting for a late-afternoon glow when the vines seem to shimmer in the sun. Each time, we’re capturing not just how the vineyard looks, but also how it feels.

When all four images are finally captured—winter, spring, summer, and fall—they’re brought into the studio and skillfully combined to form the artwork. The images are interlaced in a specific pattern, creating a single analog print that contains all four seasons within its layers. Then, an acrylic lenticular lens is placed on top. This lens interacts with the interlaced print, ensuring that as you walk past, each season snaps into view at just the right angle. The result is a sort of visual magic trick—watching the vines progress from frosty dormancy to blossoming buds, lush green leaves, and finally vibrant autumn hues.

By capturing the vineyard through careful observation and waiting for nature’s moments of perfection, we tell a deeper story than simply “four photos stitched together.” It’s an immersive journey that honors the spirit and hard work behind every vintage. The unique perspective and patient approach preserve the vineyard’s changing beauty in one captivating piece, reflecting not only the passage of time but also the heart and soul of the land itself.

What is Lenticular Art?

ANIMATE YOUR AUDIENCE: The Magic of Lenticular Art

Lenticular art is all about bringing images to life through motion. By strategically layering and printing visuals beneath a specialized “lens,” you can showcase multiple frames in a single piece. As viewers move past the artwork, each frame appears in succession, creating an engaging flip or 3D effect. Below is an overview of the key elements that make lenticular prints so captivating and durable.

Selecting the Right Materials

Making a great lenticular print starts with choosing the right materials. While modern technology and ever-evolving materials handle much of the heavy lifting, understanding each option helps you create a piece that best meets your vision.

Material Types

  • PETG: A form of polyester commonly used for lenticular lenses in the U.S. and Europe. PETG is both durable and long-lasting, making it a go-to for fine art and commercial projects alike.

  • Acrylic (PMMA): Widely recognized for its clarity, acrylic is a popular choice for higher-gauge lenses and outdoor installations. It’s tough, weather-resistant, and delivers vibrant results.

  • Polystyrene (PS): Known for its clarity, polystyrene is often used for 3D lenses. While it can produce crisp, vivid images, it requires careful handling because it’s less resistant to impact.

LPI (Lenticules Per Inch)

Often referred to as the “resolution” of lenticular art, LPI measures how many lenticules (the little ridges on the lens) fit into one inch. This number helps determine the optimal viewing distance and the type of effect—motion or 3D—best suited to your artwork.

  • Coarse Lenses (15–40 LPI): Ideal for large-format prints and longer viewing distances. They minimize “ghosting” between frames and maintain clarity even when viewed from afar.

  • Fine Lenses (higher LPI): Perfect for art that requires more detail. At several feet away, the ridges virtually disappear, offering a smooth, polished finish. The choice between coarse and fine ultimately depends on how the artwork is set up and the artist’s or designer’s creative goals.

Thickness

For large-format lenticular pieces, thickness typically ranges from 0.033" to 0.15". This is closely tied to both the LPI and whether the lens is designed for 3D or motion effects:

  • 3D Lenses: Usually thicker to accentuate depth.

  • Motion Lenses: Often thinner, focusing on smooth transitions between frames.

  • Display Support: Most large-format prints benefit from a supportive backing to avoid any sagging over time.

Viewing Angle

Every lenticular lens is engineered with a specific viewing angle, usually between 25° and 54°. Here’s how that affects your piece:

  • Narrow Angles (around 25°): Provide a quicker “flip” effect and often pair well with 3D designs.

  • Wider Angles (around 45°–54°): Create smoother, more gradual transitions, ideal for motion effects.

  • Image Repetition: A narrower angle means fewer repeats of the same sequence; a wider angle means the images repeat more frequently as the viewer moves.

Viewing Distance

Lenticular prints look best within certain viewing ranges. Generally, finer lenses work at closer distances (1–10 feet), while coarser lenses are great for bigger spaces (5–30 feet). Beyond 30 feet, the effect can diminish unless you’re working with specific design considerations to maintain impact at a distance.

By blending the right materials, lens properties, and printing techniques, lenticular art harnesses both art and science to captivate viewers. The result? A piece that not only “animates” your audience but also stands the test of time.
